Theva Residency is a very modern boutique hotel with astonishing views over Kandy from its hilltop location, and is a drive of about 15mins from the city centre. All the rooms are individual and are simply but luxuriously decorated with splashes of red, yellow and blue – colours often seen at the Kandy Perahera. All the rooms have huge windows to make the best of the views over Kandy. In addition, the Superior Rooms have their own balcony and a private outdoor bathtub! The Suites have more privacy and even better views of the valley from their outdoor Jacuzzi. Meals can be served either in the restaurant, outdoor terrace (from where there are fabulous views of the hills), or in your own room. The infinity pool also enjoys the same views – there are no gardens as such.

The Richmond House in Kandy

Richmond House is a small boutique guest house set on a hill about a 20 minutes’ drive from the centre of Kandy in the picturesque Sri Lankan Hill Country.

It has a feel of a colonial style villa with an impressive staircase. All the rooms are rather eclectic and furnished with traditional Sri Lankan style furniture. All rooms have their own private balcony with views out over Kandy. The views can also be enjoyed from the enclosed small restaurant.

The Lavender House, Pussellawa

This boutique hotel is a stunning old tea planter’s bungalow which is surrounded by the Helboda Tea Plantations, some 45 minutes’ drive from Kandy in Central Sri Lanka. Its hilltop location is sublime- looking past the infinity pool, you can see the mountains covered in tea plantations and the Kotmale reservoir in the distance. The bungalow has been lovingly restored showing off its old world charm with highly polished floors and many fine antiques. It does though have an intimate, cosy feel to it, so feels more like a private home. All the rooms have their own individual character and have open log fires which can be lit on cool nights. There is no AC here (it isn’t necessary as it is higher up in the hills). You can eat wherever you wish – in the hotel’s sumptuous dining room, lounge, terrace or by the pool. It is perfect for those that want to experience something of the old Sri Lankan colonial life. It certainly deserves the TripAdvisor Award of Travellers Choice 2013.

The Kandy House, Kandy

The Kandy House is located some 30mins from the centre of Kandy in a secluded situation. It is a beautifully (and very sympathetically) converted ‘Walauwa’ (colonial manor house) which having been brought into the 21st-century with all modern facilities required by a luxury boutique hotel, is still able to show off its original architecture (with polished wooden floors, elegant antiques and beautiful fabrics. There are two different grades of room – Ultra and Deluxe. All the Ultra-rooms are larger (than the Deluxe Rooms) and have access to their own verandah. You can take meals on the verandah, which overlooks the fabulous gardens and on the lower terrace, the stunning freshwater Infinity pool. This has to be one of the best hotels in Kandy!

Sky Pavilion, Kandy

This is a delightful small new luxury villa accommodation about a 15 minute drive from the centre of Kandy. Being set on a hill, all the rooms and the dining room have breath-taking views over Kandy and the mountains in the distance. All the rooms in the hotel are decorated in a chic white understated way (which goes along with the theme of being in the clouds). Both Andromeda and Cygnus rooms are on the first level, whilst Akila and Ankaa are on the uppermost level opening out onto the Sky Deck. The Cygnus room has a very private outdoor bath.

Sir John’s Bungalow, Riverstone

Sir John’s Bungalow is located well within the Knuckles Mountains and has astonishingly beautiful views of the mountains and wilderness- these can also be enjoyed from the verandah. It’s a 2hr drive from Kandy –and there is very little other accommodation to be had in the area. It is a 100yr old tea planter’s bungalow that has been recently converted into a charming 5 bedroomed guesthouse. The accommodation is simple but comfortable with a homely feel. It is perfect for those that want to get out and experience the beauty of the Knuckles Mountains where there are many walks.

Royal River Resort, Kithulgala

Royal River Resort is located up a small dirt track in the middle of the jungle some 25mins from the village of Kithulgala which in itself is about 2hrs from Kandy. The hotel itself has been built right over a waterfall on the Ing River so sometimes there can be noise from the river when in full flood. Part of the river has been dammed to create a freshwater pool which is a real joy use and with only 4 rooms, you are likely to have it to yourself. The rooms are very comfortably furnished in colonial style furniture. To many, this is a totally unique and idyllic situation!

Rosyth Estate House, Kegalle

The Estate House is set in a 62 acre private working tea and rubber estate. Having been built in 1926, this tea planter’s bungalow is a unique chance to experience a bygone era. It was completely refurbished in 2010 to become a beautiful peaceful boutique hotel. It is located on a hillside at 1,100ft and so has outstanding views of the surrounding hills. Kandy is less than an hour away whilst Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage is 25 mins away.

Rangala House, Teldeniya

Rangala House is on the edge of the Knuckles Mountains about 75mins drive from Kandy- being a bit higher than Kandy, it feels a little cooler. Formerly a tea planters bungalow, it has been beautifully converted into a small boutique hotel. There is a large comfortable lounge but the piece de resistance is the amazing 50ft verandah where there are exquisite views of the mountains, paddyfields and tea plantations – most people decide to have their meals here, to take in these views. Down below, in the stunning terraced gardens, is a fantastic pool which also enjoys these views. Would certainly recommend a minimum of a 2 night stay to take in the beautiful scenery and enjoy the fantastic hospitality here.
